This fall, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Saskatchewan’s oldest standing building and a well-known landmark along the Churchill River, will receive approximately $217,000 for the refurbishment of stained glass windows and frames. This is the second phase of upgrades being made to the church in Stanley Mission at Lac La Ronge Provincial Park.
The windows in Holy Trinity Anglican Church have been identified as one of the critical elements in its heritage character. Phase two of the recommended repairs to the church, restoration of the windows and frames, will preserve the defining element of this facility.
“Holy Trinity Anglican Church has immense historical significance and preservation work is required to protect the structural and aesthetic integrity of the church,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Mark Docherty said. “This church is important to the people of Saskatchewan. These window repairs will ensure the building is preserved for future generations.”
Advantage Roofing Ltd. of Saskatoon has been awarded a contract valued at $217,000 to repair the stained glass windows and frames at Holy Trinity Anglican Church. The church has 37 windows which contain more than one thousand pieces of stained glass combined. Friar’s Stained Glass Studio of Regina has been identified to oversee the detailed glazing work.
The project was approved through the 2014-15 capital budget process and will be funded through the expensed portion of the capital budget. Work is scheduled to begin in early September and should be completed in fall of 2014.
Necessary improvements to the church were identified several years ago when an engineering consultant was hired to complete a thorough condition assessment of Holy Trinity Anglican Church. The report recommended a number of specific repairs needed to ensure the long term serviceability of the building. Thanks to a cost-sharing agreement between the Government of Saskatchewan and the Government of Canada, phase one of the church’s restoration was completed earlier this year. This included upgrades to the roof and foundation.
Construction of Holy Trinity Anglican Church took place between 1854 and 1860. The building was designated as a Provincial Heritage Site in Saskatchewan on August 26, 1981. Heritage properties contribute to our understanding and appreciation of Saskatchewan's past, its people and its culture.
