Grand Opening of New Joint-Use School in Swift Current

Released on October 14, 2014

Today Premier Brad Wall, Education Minister Don Morgan, students, dignitaries and representatives from the Chinook and Holy Trinity School Divisions gathered to celebrate the grand opening for École Centennial and All Saints Catholic schools; a $51 million joint-use education facility which is part of the larger Swift Current Integrated Facility.  The Government of Saskatchewan has committed more than $33 million toward this innovative school.

“Congratulations to both local school boards for coming together to build the most integrated elementary joint-use school and setting an example for the other joint-use schools that are being built to meet the needs of students and provide opportunities for a growing province,” Wall said.  “As part of a record investment in education since 2007, this joint-use school will not only provide a great learning facility for more than 1,000 students and early learners from both the public and Catholic divisions, but also the community of Swift Current as a whole.”

Designed as part of the Swift Current Integrated Facility, these two schools will share Practical and Applied arts space, band rooms and a child care facility.

“The commitment of the Chinook and Holy Trinity School Boards made the joint-use school a reality,” Chinook School Division Board Chair Randy Beler said.  “The end result is a facility that is superior to what either board could have accomplished individually.  We are very proud to have a state of the art facility that will benefit our children and community.”

“As board chair of Holy Trinity, I wish to say how proud I am of this exemplary learning facility,” Holy Trinity Catholic School Division Board Chair Joann Blazieko said.  “The open and honest collaboration between the two boards has resulted in an outstanding product that will provide exciting educational opportunities for children and families in Swift Current for many years to come.”

The integrated facility will be a community hub for Swift Current, offering a fieldhouse and wellness centre, a library and art gallery, a long-term care facility, and an aquatics centre, in addition to the existing joint-use schools and hospital, all of which will be readily available to the students attending both École Centennial and All Saints Catholic schools.

“I love the new school because the gym is amazingly big,” All Saints Catholic School Grade Six student Kamryn Johnson said.  “I also love the new school because of the awesome furniture and the colours all over the place.”

Since November 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $700 million toward 47 major school capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
