$13.8 Million Renovation Completed for Humboldt Public School

Released on November 21, 2014

Today Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer, on behalf of Education Minister Don Morgan, joined students, teachers, members of the community and representatives from the Horizon School Division to celebrate the completion of a major addition and renovation of Humboldt Public School.  Overall, the government has contributed approximately $13.8 million to the project.

“Our government is committed to meeting the demands of a growing province, and this school will address the needs of students here in Humboldt,” Harpauer said.  “This project is an excellent example of putting the student first by providing them a modern, safe and state of the art school that will encourage their passion for learning.”

The upgraded school combines a portion of the former Humboldt Collegiate Institute to the current Humboldt Public Elementary School and includes a renovated gymnasium with a new stage, seven additional classrooms, new industrial arts, home economics and science labs, art and music rooms, library resource centre, therapy gym, Snoezelen room, and a 51 space licensed day care.

“Today is not just about celebrating the opening of a new facility as much as it is about celebrating the renewal of Humboldt Public School,” Horizon School Division Board Chair Jim Hack said.  “We realize it was difficult to say goodbye to a piece of Humboldt’s history, but here we stand in a piece of Humboldt’s future, and what a marvelous future it is.”

“Our entire school community feels so very fortunate at this time,” Humboldt Public School Principal Dave Hill said.  “The spacious design and modern features complement everything we do in terms of engaging students in their learning.”

“I felt quite good about moving into a new school because it would provide a better learning environment,” Grade 8 student Zach Wittig said.  “I like the bigger gym, the industrial arts and home economics rooms and the fact that the younger students and older students have their own areas.  Our school is clean and has brand new equipment, and the people in it make it a welcoming place.”

Since November 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $700 million toward 47 major school capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
