Today, Grade 8 students from Redvers School in southeastern Saskatchewan and Westmount Community School in Saskatoon will spend the day at the Legislative Building learning about Saskatchewan’s democratic system of government.
“Visiting the Legislative Building and learning about the various roles in the Legislative Assembly will help these students gain a better understanding of what happens here,” Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Mark Docherty said. “Hopefully the experience even encourages some of them to pursue a career in government in the future.”
In total, more than 50 students, teachers and chaperones will visit the Legislative Building. The day begins when the students are introduced in the House following Question Period. In the afternoon, students will reconvene in the House to observe a panel discussion by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Minister Docherty, Mr. David Forbes, representing the Official Opposition, and the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly, followed by a tour of the Legislative Building.
“The Grade 8 students of Redvers School are honoured to partake in this learning experience,” Redvers School teacher Morgan Wasylyk said. “We the teachers, parents and students feel that a day at the Legislature is a meaningful learning opportunity because it is imperative for every citizen of Saskatchewan to understand and appreciate the role and relevance of our government. In gaining this understanding and appreciation, these young adults may apply what they have learned as future leaders and voters of our province.”
An event similar to this was held in 2012 during the 100th anniversary of the Legislative Building. Moving forward, the plan is to hold a “Day in the Legislative Assembly” twice a year.
The next event will take place in the spring of 2015.
