In ongoing efforts to address bullying in Saskatchewan, the Ministry of Education is providing $80,000 to support the Saskatoon Restorative Action Program (RAP) in continuing to provide programming in nine of Saskatoon’s high schools as well as enhance the provincial understanding of how to implement school-based restorative action programs.
RAP is a school-based initiative which uses a social development approach to address issues of conflict, improve leadership skills and contribute to a safe and caring community. It is guided by three core principles: prevention, intervention and reconnection.
“The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to taking a stand against bullying,” Education Minister Don Morgan said. “We are excited to continue supporting programs, such as RAP, that encourage youth leadership, work with community-based organizations, enhance school-based restorative action programming, and provide the supports and resources that students need.”
RAP is transforming the cycle of bullying, conflict and crime among Saskatoon’s youth into opportunities for positive change, learning and personal growth. The community driven program began in 2003 and was developed by Saskatoon Rotary Clubs in partnership with Saskatoon Public School Division, Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Division, the City of Saskatoon, Saskatoon Police Service, the Government of Saskatchewan and various businesses, corporations and foundations.
RAP was specifically named in Saskatchewan’s Action Plan to Address Bullying and Cyberbullying as a model for other areas of the province to follow regarding conflict resolution, youth leadership and skill building in support of healthy relationship development.
