A two-year photo speed enforcement pilot kicks off Friday when the camera located at the intersection of Highway 1 and 9th Avenue in Moose Jaw begins operating. Signs are being installed today.
There will be a two-month warning period to give drivers a chance to adjust to the program. During this time, drivers exceeding the speed limit will be mailed a warning instead of a ticket. Large 1.2 m x 3 m (4’ by 10’) yellow signs with black lettering will inform motorists they are about to enter a photo-speed-enforced zone, and black and white regulatory signs will also be posted within the zone.
“The intent of photo speed enforcement is to calm traffic, since drivers reduce their speed to avoid a ticket,” Minister responsible for SGI Don McMorris said. “That benefits all road users, since speed is one of the top three contributing factors to fatal crashes in our province. The signs are very large and highly visible so motorists know to slow down. The goal of the pilot is to issue zero tickets and have zero crashes, fatalities or injuries in these zones.”
Construction and installation is currently underway at the other photo speed enforcement locations, which include:
- Highway 1 east between Pilot Butte and White City
- Highway 12 at Martensville
- Ring Road in Regina
- Circle Drive in Saskatoon
- selected school zones in Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw
SGI will notify the public once cameras are operational at these locations.
