Continuing this year’s focus on Saskatchewan’s proud military heritage, Provincial Military Liaison D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert will visit the province’s top Saskatchewan Cadet Corps and Squadrons to present certificates and pins to the cadets from those groups being recognized this year for excellence and service in their communities.
“The cadet program has a rich tradition in our province, first and foremost in service to community, but also for many who have gone on to serve our country in the military,” Huyghebaert said. “When we commemorate our province’s long and rich military heritage, as we have been doing this year, or join with the nation to honour our most recent fallen heroes, cadets represent the next generation of patriotic citizens, military and civic leaders.”
The 2014 cadet units being honoured are:
- 45 Jervis Bay Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps, Saskatoon;
- 155 Royal Regina Rifles Army Cadet Corps, Regina; and
- 702 Lynx Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, Saskatoon.
Currently, Saskatchewan has 1,668 youth enrolled in 58 Sea, Army and Air Cadet Corps and Squadrons. The Saskatchewan cadet program accepts youth between the ages of 12 to 18, and teaches citizenship, personal discipline, as well as general military knowledge. This year, Saskatchewan commemorated the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War, observed the 75th anniversary of the start of the Second World War and 70 years since the D-Day invasion. Also marked was the departure of the last Canadian combat troops from Afghanistan and the Afghanistan Memorial Vigil which was hosted in the Legislative Building in September.
Lieutenant-Colonel (Ret’d) Huyghebaert was a pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force and is currently the Honourary Colonel of 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School at 15 Wing Moose Jaw.
