Strong employment numbers and continued growth in the Saskatchewan economy meant consumers had a busy March in the province’s retail sector. In a report released today by Statistics Canada, Saskatchewan’s sales jumped to nearly $1.6 billion for the month. This was a 9.1 per cent increase (seasonally-adjusted) over March 2013, the second highest growth rate among the provinces and a record for the month.“Retail sales are an indicator of economic prosperity and hard working men and women of this province are benefiting from the success they helped to create,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said. “More people are working in Saskatchewan than ever before and this means Saskatchewan businesses are seeing continued growth.”
On a monthly basis, retail sales increased 1.1 per cent (seasonally-adjusted) over February 2014. This landed Saskatchewan in a three-way tie for second place with Alberta and British Columbia.
Nationally, retail sales were down by 0.1 per cent month-over-month.
“Saskatchewan has built a reputation as the place to live, work, invest and do business,” Boyd said. “We are seeing more people move to Saskatchewan, more businesses established, and more jobs being created as a result. This produces an economic environment and a quality of life that we can all be proud of.”
