Multiple Companies Fined for Fall Protection Violations

Saalmic Mechanical Services Ltd. of Shellbrook pleaded guilty to two counts under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $1,040 in Shellbrook Provincial Court on May 6, 2014.

The company pleaded guilty to:
  • contravening section 116 of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers use a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge; and
  • contravening section 91 of the regulations (failure to ensure workers wear approved industrial protective headwear) and was fined $150 with a $50 surcharge.
The charges relate to an inspection on March 7, 2012, where an Occupational Health Officer observed a worker working on a roof in Shellbrook without utilizing fall protection equipment.

In another case, BP Construction Ltd. of Prince Albert pleaded guilty to one count under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $840 in Shellbrook Provincial Court on May 6, 2014.

The company pleaded guilty to:
  • contravening section 17 of the regulations (failure to ensure that all work at a place of employment is sufficiently and competently supervised) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge.
The charge relates to an inspection on March 7, 2012, where an Occupational Health Officer observed a worker working at a construction site in Shellbrook without utilizing fall protection equipment.

In a separate matter, Thompson’s Plumbing and Heating Ltd. of Meadow Lake pleaded guilty to one count under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $840 in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on May 5, 2014.

The company pleaded guilty to:
  • contravening section 116 of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers use a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge.
The charge relates to an inspection on March 5, 2012, where an Occupational Health Officer observed two workers at a residential construction site in Meadow Lake installing a vent on a roof without utilizing fall protection equipment.  Two additional charges were stayed.

In 2013, the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety’s Occupational Health and Safety division conducted 765 inspections in the construction sector.
