One of Saskatchewan’s government buildings has been recognized with an award for environmental sustainability. The SIAST Kelsey Campus in Saskatoon was named BOMA BESt in Class at an awards presentation May 15 in Regina.BOMA BESt (Building Owners and Managers Association Building Environmental Standards) is the Canadian industry standard for commercial building sustainability certification. Top scoring buildings across the province were nominated for the local awards and the SIAST Kelsey Campus was awarded the Level 2 best in class award.
“Operating facilities in an efficient manner that also reduces the province’s environmental footprint is a very important aspect of the government’s building management goals,” Central Services Minister Nancy Heppner said. “Having one of our buildings recognized with an award and six others nominated, is a clear indication that we are succeeding in our environmental sustainability goals.”
Administered by BOMA Canada, BOMA BESt is a unique and voluntary national program designed to assess the environmental performance and management of buildings. There are four levels of BOMA BESt certification:
- Level 1 - best practices achieved;
- Level 2 - best practices achieved and scored 70 to 79 per cent on full BOMA BESt assessment;
- Level 3 - best practices achieved and scored 80 to 89 per cent on full BOMA BESt assessment; and
- Level 4 - best practices achieved and scored 90 per cent or greater on full BOMA BESt assessment.
