The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed the week of May 4-10 as Missing Persons Week in the province.“Compassion and support from government, police agencies and the community is important to the family members of missing persons,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said. “I encourage more people to do what they can to help so we can collectively provide meaningful support to resolve missing persons cases in our province.”
“There are currently 118 long-term missing persons cases in Saskatchewan,” Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell said. “By formally recognizing this week, we raise awareness about the reasons people go missing and identify what families and friends can do when someone goes missing.”
Throughout the week, members of the Provincial Partnership Committee on Missing Persons will provide information on the different reasons people go missing along with prevention tips.
“Some missing persons cases are the result of accidents or mental health issues; even though police are involved in the investigations, not all missing person cases are criminal,” Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police President Chief Troy Hagen said. “It is important that we continue to work together toward improved education, prevention, response and support in all missing persons cases.”
In 2006, the Provincial Partnership Committee on Missing Persons was created with representatives from government, police, First Nations, Métis, and community-based organizations.
