Government of Saskatchewan Supports Research Internships for Graduate Students and International Education

Released on March 31, 2014

The Government of Saskatchewan announced $365,000 in funding to support graduate student research collaborations through Mitacs.

This funding includes $225,000 for 30 research and development internships for graduate and post doctoral students in Saskatchewan industries through the Mitacs Accelerate program, and $140,000 for 20 international research opportunities though the Mitacs Globalink program.

“Our government is committed to supporting research and innovation opportunities for Saskatchewan students,” Advanced Education Minister Rob Norris said.  “Today’s investment will provide increased opportunities for these students to develop and apply their research skills.  As students begin to transition from learning to earning it allows them to gain valuable experience which benefits our growing economy and province.”

Mitacs Accelerate graduate students and post-doctoral fellows assist companies to develop and test new technologies, improve processes and services, and increase productivity and innovation.  The Government of Saskatchewan has supported the Mitacs Accelerate program since 2007, which has resulted in 145 graduate and post-doctoral fellows undertaking research collaborations with companies in the agriculture, forestry, mining, oil and gas sectors and more.

Mitacs Globalink brings the world’s brightest senior undergraduate and graduate students to Canada for research and gives Saskatchewan students the opportunity to experience research abroad.  The program will work in conjunction with the Government of Saskatchewan’s international education strategy, and support objectives outlined in the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth.

“Facilitating innovation and research excellence, with an eye on international competitiveness, is the key to a vibrant economy,” Mitacs CEO and Scientific Director Dr. Arvind Gupta said.  “Mitacs thanks the Government of Saskatchewan for this investment in Mitacs and we look forward to working with industry and academia to build the next generation of innovators and researchers.”

Mitacs is a national, private not-for-profit organization that develops the next generation of innovators with vital scientific and business skills through a suite of unique research and training programs, such as Mitacs Accelerate, Elevate, Step, and Globalink.  In partnership with companies, government and universities, Mitacs is supporting a new economy using Canada’s most valuable resource – its people.
