Homeownership Becomes a Reality for Habitat for Humanity Partner Family in Moose Jaw

Released on March 25, 2014

A Moose Jaw family now has a place of their own to call home, thanks to a partnership between the Government of Saskatchewan and Habitat for Humanity.  The province, through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, provided $50,000 in funding to help build the home located at 907 Ominica Street East.  In addition, Conexus Credit Union provided $100,000 in funding for this build.  The project also received approximately $15,000 from Mosaic Potash Corporation.  The City of Moose Jaw donated the land and the cost of building permits.

“Our continued support of Habitat for Humanity is helping to create more affordable homeownership options for all Saskatchewan people,” Moose Jaw Wakamow MLA Greg Lawrence said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude.  “We continue to deliver on the provincial housing strategy and the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth Plan to make a difference in communities throughout the province.  Most importantly, we are working together with our partners to help families find a safe, stable home where they can begin a new life for themselves.”

“Habitat for Humanity Moose Jaw is excited to welcome our newest family into homeownership,” Habitat for Humanity Moose Jaw Co-Chair Jennifer Dominquez said.  “Homeownership is a dream that many families will not have the opportunity to experience.  Homeownership truly changes lives and we are honoured to be a part of the experience with each and every home we build in the community of Moose Jaw.  We would like to thank the Province of Saskatchewan, Conexus Credit Union and Mosaic, along with all our community partners and volunteers for helping us successfully complete our fourth build.  The family is extremely deserving of this home; their willingness to partner with Habitat has been clearly demonstrated.  This new home will change their life for the better.”

In the 2014-15 Budget, the province committed $750,000 to help build 12 new Habitat for Humanity homes throughout the province.  This brings our government’s overall commitment to Habitat for Humanity to $7.85 million since March 2009.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.  The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.  Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity will contribute 500 volunteer hours toward the building of their home or other Habitat homes.
