Regina Family Receives Keys to New Habitat for Humanity Home

Released on March 10, 2014

A Regina family received keys to their new Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) home during a heart-warming dedication ceremony held today.  The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), contributed $50,000 to the project.  NewsTalk 980 CJME also partnered with Habitat to host a radio-a-thon and collect millions of pennies, raising $100,000 for this build after the announcement of the penny being phased out.  Additional funding was provided by Mosaic Potash Corporation and the City of Regina.

“Our government is proud to support Habitat in its mission to provide safe, quality homes for hard-working Saskatchewan families,” Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said.  “Homeownership has such a positive impact on families – it means an exciting new beginning that has a ripple effect throughout the community.  Through strong partnerships and our Plan for Growth, we are pleased to help make affordable homeownership a reality.”

“It’s nothing short of amazing to see what can happen when a community pulls together like this,” NewsTalk 980 CJME Program Director Jay Stone said.  “We all know someone who would give the shirt off their back to help a stranger in need; it defines who we are as Saskatchewanians.  I’m honoured that our radio station could be a part of something so special, to see such gratitude from the brilliant people in this great province.  A BIG thank you to all our community partners including Habitat for Humanity, and our great listeners who helped make the dream of homeownership a reality for this Regina family.”

“This home is a new beginning for another Regina family, made possible by our partners Newstalk 980 CJME, along with funding from the Government of Saskatchewan through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and Mosaic,” Habitat for Humanity Regina Chief Operating Officer Rob Gartner said.  “Through these strong partnerships, we are able to continue to help Regina families break the cycle of poverty through homeownership.   Every key ceremony is an opportunity for us to stop and reflect on our impact in the community.  We are happy and honoured to welcome this family to their new home today.”

Located at 615 Wascana Street, the single-family, bi-level home has three bedrooms and is approximately 1,430 square feet (132 square metres) over both levels.

In the 2013-14 Budget, the province committed $2 million to help build 40 new Habitat for Humanity homes throughout Saskatchewan.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.  The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low income with access to affordable homeownership.  Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity will contribute 500 volunteer hours toward the building of their home or other Habitat homes.
