Government of Saskatchewan Celebrates Foster Families

Released on June 16, 2014

Foster parents in Saskatchewan were celebrated at a banquet on Saturday evening in Saskatoon.  The Honouring and Caring Banquet recognized foster parents who have dedicated 20 years of service, and those who are retiring with 20 or more years of service.  The event was hosted by the Saskatchewan Foster Families Association (SFFA) and the Ministry of Social Services.

“Foster families in this province play a vital role in the lives of some of our most vulnerable citizens,” Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer said.  “I want to personally thank all of our dedicated and caring foster parents who provide a home to children and youth when they need one the most.”

There are approximately 570 foster families in Saskatchewan who are caring for 1,150 children in care.

“We are extremely proud to support foster parents in this province,” SFFA Executive Director Deb Davies said.  “Through their commitment and compassion, foster parents welcome children into their homes and recognize the value and unique circumstances of each and every one.”

The SFFA also celebrated its 40th anniversary at the banquet.  This year’s theme is Families Helping Families.

The SFFA is a non-profit, community-based organization created to support foster parents as caregivers through education and advocacy.  They work with foster parents to create healthy homes, positive environments, and brighter futures for children and youth in care across the province.
