Alberta Company Fined After Worker Fatality

Petrobakken Energy Ltd. of Calgary, Alberta pleaded guilty to two counts under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $28,000 in Regina Provincial Court on May 27, 2014.

The company pleaded guilty to:
  • contravening clause 414(a) of the regulations (failure to ensure that a rig was inspected by a competent person before commencing operations, and at least every 30 working days after that) and was fined $10,000 with a $4,000 surcharge; and
  • contravening clause 414(b) of the regulations (failure to ensure that where a defect or unsafe condition was identified it took immediate steps to protect the health and safety of workers who might be at risk and correct this unsafe condition as soon as was reasonably practicable) and was fined $10,000 with a $4,000 surcharge.
The company was charged after a worker sustained fatal injuries on December 14, 2009, near Kisbey, Saskatchewan as a result of a service rig collapse.
 
Since April 2014, there have been 24 convictions for occupational health and safety violations with total fines of nearly $116,000.
