Province and Habitat for Humanity Present House Keys to a Local Family

Released on June 5, 2014

A family in Prince Albert now has a place of their own to call home, thanks to a partnership between the Government of Saskatchewan and Habitat for Humanity.  The province provided $50,000 in funding to the project through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.

Prince Albert-Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens attended a key presentation today on behalf Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer.  The single-family home, located at 964-4th Street East, is approximately 1,000 square feet (93 square metres) and has four bedrooms.

“Providing families with hope for the future through homeownership is a goal that we share with Habitat for Humanity and its partners,” Jurgens said.  “We are very pleased to help Habitat for Humanity provide safe and affordable housing for partner families in this community.  Initiatives like this one support our Plan for Growth, which strives to ensure that families have access to safe and affordable housing across Saskatchewan.”

“We would like to congratulate the family who have successfully completed all of the requirements which will now enable them to get a mortgage for this home,” Habitat for Humanity Board Chairman Morris Sawchuk said.  “This is a special event because it is also the first home that Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert purchased and remodeled.”

In the 2014-15 Budget, the province committed an additional $750,000 through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation to help build an additional 12 new Habitat for Humanity homes throughout Saskatchewan.  This brings the government’s commitment to Habitat for Humanity to a total of $7.85 million since March 2009.

This funding will soon support builds in 11 communities across the province including Regina, Prince Albert, Lloydminster, Saskatoon, Nipawin, Yorkton, Moose Jaw, Humboldt, Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle and Weyburn.

Saskatchewan Housing Corporation now provides $65,000 per home in funding.  This is up from the $50,000 per home which was provided up to March 2014.

Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 partnering hours to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes.  This assists in the development of the Habitat for Humanity community and their neighbourhood.  To learn more about Habitat for Humanity and their work across Saskatchewan, visit www.habitat.ca.
