National Transportation Week in Saskatchewan

Released on June 2, 2014

This week provides an opportunity to celebrate the contributions the men and women who build, operate and maintain Saskatchewan’s transportation system make to our economy and society.

June 1 to 7 has officially been proclaimed National Transportation Week in Saskatchewan.

“Saskatchewan’s  provincial highways, municipal roads, mainline and shortline railways, pipelines and  airports touch our daily lives in countless ways,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris said.  “Our export-based economy relies on safe, efficient and cost-effective transportation systems to access markets across Canada and around the world.”

Exports are a major contributor to the record growth Saskatchewan continues to experience.  Saskatchewan’s exports in 2013 were valued at $32.9 billion, a 70 per cent increase from 2007.

In addition to components of the transportation owned and operated by municipal governments and the private sector, Saskatchewan has 26,000 km of provincial highways, 12 ferries, one barge and 17 airports.

Since 2007, the provincial government has invested $4.3 billion in the provincial transportation system.
