Highway 58 near Gravelbourg Sees Improvements

Released on June 2, 2014

Work is underway on an $18 million upgrade to an important stretch of Highway 58 in southern Saskatchewan.

Close to 20 km of highway between Highway 43 junction  at Gravelbourg and Highway 13 junction at Lafleche will be completely rebuilt from a poor condition thin-membrane surface (TMS) to primary-weight pavement.

“Highway 58 connects the communities of Gravelbourg and Lafleche, provides access to the popular Thomson Lake Regional Park and serves as an important agricultural link,” Wood River MLA Yogi Huyghebaert said on behalf of Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris.  “The rebuilt road will provide a safe, smooth driving surface for tourists, area residents and shippers alike.”

Traffic will be reduced to one lane at times during construction, and motorists passing through the area are advised to watch for soft portions and fresh gravel, and be aware of the potential for blowing dust.  Drivers must obey flag people and should consider setting aside extra time for travel.

Completion of the project is currently targeted for Fall 2014, subject to weather and contractor progress.

“Construction of Highway 58 south will be of great benefit to Gravelbourg, Thomson Lake Regional Park, Lafleche and all the residents of the south country, many of whom come to our community for medical, dental, and other services we provide,” Gravelbourg Mayor Réal Forest said.  “The highway is used by many who commute to work every day, as well as students who travel on school buses.  The Gravelbourg-Lafleche Alliance, which includes Thomson Lake and the RMs of Gravelbourg and Wood River, is getting a very important regional economic boost.”

All motorists are reminded they must slow to 60 km/hr in highway work zones.  New simplified signage will direct drivers exactly when to slow to 60 km/hr.  Drivers now face three times the normal fines for speeding and heavier enforcement in work zones.

The government has invested a record $4.3 billion in transportation infrastructure since 2008.
