Through the combined efforts of the Government of Saskatchewan and Walters Lane Community Residence, a new 10-unit supportive living rental residence for adults with cognitive disabilities officially opened today in Saskatoon in Corman Park.
The Province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, contributed $200,000 to the initiative from the provincial Summit Action Fund. This fund was created to help increase housing supply across the province through innovation in the housing sector.
“Our Government is proud to help improve the quality of life of Saskatchewan people,” Education Minister and MLA for Saskatoon Southeast Don Morgan said, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer. “This residence will provide 10 adults with cognitive disabilities the supports they require so they can remain close to family and friends, and participate in the community. This project represents what the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth is all about – to support individuals and families in greatest housing need in communities across the province.”
"We recognize the challenges faced by parents trying to find a safe, secure and social environment with support services for their cognitively challenged adult children,” Walters Lane Community Residence co-owners Larry and Joan Grozell said. “Our project has been a benefactor of the Summit Action Fund initiative, which has made a valuable contribution toward providing additional choices and supported housing options for cognitively challenged young adults."
Located at 5310 Clarence Avenue South in Corman Park, Walters Lane Community Residence is a supportive living rental residence consisting of 10 units, each with a private ensuite. The common living area and kitchen area were created from an existing structure on the property, while the attached 10 self-contained units are new construction.
This project is aligned with a number of strategic priorities that were outlined in the Government of Saskatchewan’s Provincial Housing Strategy. These priorities include the need to increase housing supply, to improve housing affordability and to support individuals and families in greatest need of housing.
