Makwa Lake Provincial Park to Receive Electrical Upgrades This Summer

Released on July 17, 2014

Today, the province announced electrical upgrades for 84 campsites in Stabler Point Campground at Makwa Lake Provincial Park.  Livewire Electric Ltd. of Shellbrook has been contracted to provide electrical upgrades to 84 campsites as well as roadway lighting and related site development in Stabler Point Campground.  The upgrades will provide park users with the option of 15, 30 or 50 amp service to accommodate larger recreational units.

“As a growing province, we have an opportunity to invest in Saskatchewan’s quality of life,” Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport Mark Docherty said.  “Our provincial parks play a vital role contributing to the strong quality of life we enjoy in Saskatchewan, and as they have seen record numbers of visitation year upon year, this makes our parks a strong investment.”

Many of the campsites do not meet current Canadian Electrical Code safety standards and some sites do not support the increased electric needs of large, modern recreational vehicles.

In 2013, the provincial park system set a record 3.7 million visits.  Makwa Lake Provincial Park received 132,903 of those visits.

The 2014-15 budget has increased funding to provincial parks by 4.6 per cent this year.  This includes capital and maintenance spending which will hit record levels with $14.9 million identified for upgrades and new construction projects.  Total capital investments in provincial parks have increased 244 per cent in the past seven years, compared to the previous seven year period.
