Province Supports New Housing Project in Lloydminster
Released on July 8, 2014
Through the combined efforts of the Government of Saskatchewan and the City of Lloydminster, a new affordable five-unit condominium project, Braehill Condominiums, officially opened today in Lloydminster.
The City of Lloydminster provided over $32,000 in down payment assistance which included $11,000 for the project from the Province’s Affordable Home Ownership Program (AHOP).
“This five-unit project provides much-needed affordable housing to renters ready to transition into homeownership in Lloydminster,” Minister responsible for Rural and Remote Health and MLA for Lloydminster Tim McMillan said, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer. “Under the Saskatchewan Growth Plan, our priorities include the need to increase housing supply and to improve housing affordability. Our government is proud to partner with the City of Lloydminster to achieve this goal and, most importantly, help Saskatchewan individuals and families find a safe, quality place to call home.”
“The City of Lloydminster, in conjunction with two of our leading local developers - Glencoe Developments Inc. and Musgrave Agencies Ltd. - and a local financial institution, Synergy Credit Union, partnered with the Government of Saskatchewan through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation to enable homeownership opportunities by way of creative community collaboration,” Mayor Rob Saunders said. “These five families afforded the assistance of a down payment through this partnership program and now realize their dream of affordable permanent housing in our rapidly growing city. We are thankful for this opportunity and extremely proud of the partnership results of the Community Housing Initiative Program. We are very happy for the chosen families, and truly appreciate the commitment, efforts and support of everyone involved in this collaborative housing project in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan.”
Located in the Larsen Grove neighbourhood of Lloydminster, the project consists of five townhouse units, each with two bedrooms, a finished basement and a private green space. Units were priced at $190,000.
AHOP is designed to match financial assistance provided by municipalities to moderate-income homebuyers, to a maximum of $5,000. The City of Lloydminster’s Community Housing Initiative Program (CHIP) contributed 75 per cent of the homebuyer’s down payment by combining funding from AHOP, the City, and a community fund financed by fundraising, partnerships and donations.
The Province has committed over $3.8 million through AHOP to provide approximately 825 affordable homeownership opportunities in nine Saskatchewan communities from 2011 to 2015, including nine units in Lloydminster. The Province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, continues to work with the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors to develop new housing opportunities in Lloydminster and across Saskatchewan.
This project is aligned with a number of strategic priorities that were outlined in the Government of Saskatchewan’s Provincial Housing Strategy. These priorities include the need to increase housing supply, to improve housing affordability and to support individuals and families in greatest need of housing.
