The Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM) has launched programs to keep kids entertained and informed all summer long.“Our province is growing and the RSM is the perfect place for new residents to visit,” Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport Mark Docherty said. “It’s a place that is both educational and engaging. Families can have fun learning about science and Saskatchewan at the RSM.”
For the first time ever, the RSM has partnered with the Saskatchewan Science Centre to deliver a cross-promotional activity geared at dinosaur-loving kids. It is called the T-rex passport. Kids who collect a stamp at the RSM, one at the T-rex Discovery Centre in Eastend and one at the Science Centre (currently featuring the travelling exhibit Dinosaurs Unearthed) will receive a certificate declaring them a “Junior Palaeontologist”. They will also be entered to win a gift basket worth $250 from the RSM gift shop.
Kids who enjoy collecting will want to take part in Star of the Week. Participants borrow a pair of binoculars and search the museum for a gold star. Those who find the star will receive a collectable trading card featuring the animal that the star is beside. There are five cards to collect in all. Every two weeks, the star will move to a new location.
“The RSM proves that the beach and the pool are not the only places for kids to hang out this summer,” RSM Director Harold Bryant said. “The RSM is a great place for families and young people to spend time this summer—whether it’s during the day, or on the weekend. Kids will impress their teachers in the fall, I’m sure, with all the knowledge they’ve gained at the RSM over the summer.”
Family programs aimed at kids aged four and older take place every Tuesday and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Programs last 45 minutes and the activity changes each week.
Children’s story time takes place every Thursday at 10:00 a.m. and is aimed at kids five and younger. Stories change each week.
The Paleo Pit, a self-guided children’s playroom, is open 10:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. daily until Labour Day. The Friends of the RSM are once again offering their summer camps for kids entering Grades 1-5. Single-day and five-day camps are available until August 22. For more information or to register, call 306-787-7271.
Activities are also available at the T-rex Discovery Centre in Eastend in July and August. T-rexcellent Tuesdays are aimed at kids of all ages. The tots program takes place at 10:30 a.m. and offers kids aged three to six a chance to learn about dinosaurs through crafts and stories. Kids aged six to 12 can stop by at 3:00 p.m. to learn about palaeontology by handling artifacts and specimens, as well as conducting experiments.
