Homeownership Becomes a Reality for Habitat for Humanity Partner Family in Yorkton

Released on January 30, 2014

A family in Yorkton now has a place of their own to call home, thanks to a partnership between the Government of Saskatchewan and Habitat for Humanity.  The Province, through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, provided $50,000 in funding to help build the home located at 23 Dunlop Street West.  The four-bedroom bungalow is approximately 960 square feet (89 square metres) on each level with a developed basement.

The project also received approximately $15,000 from Mosaic Potash Corporation, with an additional $25,000 raised through a raffle for a car donated by Yorkton Hyundai.

“Helping families achieve a brighter future through homeownership is very important to our government,” Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said.  “We are proud to work with Habitat for Humanity and its partners who are making an impact on the lives of so many Saskatchewan families.  This partnership supports The Saskatchewan Plan for Growth, which is working to increase the supply of safe and affordable housing in communities across Saskatchewan.”

“The need for affordable housing is greater than ever and support from the community is key to providing low-income, hard-working families with the opportunity for homeownership.  This is the fourth home completed in Yorkton and it couldn’t have been done without the support of our partners,” Habitat for Humanity COO Rob Gartner said.  “The tremendous support we receive from the provincial government through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, private companies, and individuals allows us to continue helping families break the cycle of poverty through homeownership.”

In the 2013-14 Budget, the Province committed $2 million to help build 40 new Habitat for Humanity homes throughout Saskatchewan.  This represents the largest budget increase in funding to Habitat for Humanity in Canada, and brings the Government of Saskatchewan’s overall commitment to Habitat for Humanity to a total of $7.1 million since March 2009.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.  The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.  Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity will contribute 500 volunteer hours of “sweat equity” toward the building of their home or other Habitat homes.
