Released on January 16, 2014

Benchmark Contracting Corp. of Saskatoon has pleaded guilty to two charges under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $1,040 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on January 2, 2014.

The company pleaded guilty to:
  • contravening section 116 of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers used a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge; and
  • contravening section 91 of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers use approved industrial protective headwear) and was fined $150 with a $50 surcharge.
The conviction relates to an incident which occurred on July 4, 2012.  An Occupational Health Officer observed workers on a roof at a worksite in Saskatoon not wearing fall protection.  Three other charges were stayed.

Occupatonal Health and Safety conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced.  Falls represent more than 12 per cent of all injuries reported in construction.
