City of Meadow Lake Fined More Than $11,000 for Safety Violations

The City of Meadow Lake has pleaded guilty to two charges under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $11,200 in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on February 24, 2014.


The city pleaded guilty to:
  • contravening subsection 263(1) and clause 260(2)(b) of the regulations (failure to ensure that a worker was protected from cave-ins or sliding material in a trench) and was fined $6,000 with a $2,400 surcharge; and
  • contravening clause 260(1)(d) of the regulations (failure to ensure that a trench that a worker was required or permitted to enter was kept free from an accumulation of water) and was fined $2,000 with a $800 surcharge.
The charges relate to an occupational health inspection at a construction site in Meadow Lake on September 7, 2011.  A worker was observed at the bottom of an unshored trench.  Three additional charges were stayed.

In 2013-14, there have been 69 convictions for occupational health and safety violations with total fines of more then $480,000.
