Province Supports Construction of New Housing Project

Released on February 26, 2014

With assistance from the Government of Saskatchewan through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), P.A. Community Housing Society Inc. (PACHSI) is constructing four safe, quality and affordable homes for families in Prince Albert.

SHC is providing $340,000 from the provincial Summit Action Fund (SAF) to help build the homes.

“Increasing housing supply in Prince Albert is a goal that we share with Prince Albert Community Housing Society Inc.,” Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude.  “Most importantly, we are working together to build a better life for all Saskatchewan people, which is what the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth is all about.  I am also pleased that this type of project may be replicated on other infill lots to increase accessibility of affordable housing in Prince Albert.”

“This development aligns with the goals of City Council and our ongoing efforts to improve the housing mix in Prince Albert,” Prince Albert Mayor Greg Dionne said.  “Healthy cities need housing options for all income levels and this will ensure that more families in our city have access to a safe, quality place to live.”

“We are excited to work with the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation in the construction of a new four-plex to provide four additional affordable housing units in Prince Albert,” P.A. Community Housing Society Inc. Manager Linda Boyer said.  “As rental rates continue to rise, we have seen a substantial increase in the amount of applications being submitted from young families, singles and seniors who are finding it very difficult to either keep and maintain their existing homes or find suitable rental units they can afford.  PACHSI is committed to keeping the rent at a level of affordability to those most in need.  Without the commitment of partial funding from the government, projects such as this would not be possible.”

The project will consist of a two-storey four-plex located at 1249-15th Street West in Prince Albert.  Each of the four new two-bedroom units are approximately 1,050 square feet (97 square meters) over two floors and will be constructed on a concrete slab with no basement.  The project intends to fill vacant lots in Prince Albert and to better utilize the existing infrastructure.

The Summit Action Fund (SAF) is designed to increase housing supply across the province, and is funded by the Government of Saskatchewan.  Announced in April 2011, the aim of the SAF is to encourage housing stakeholders to propose creative housing solutions that are not currently covered by existing housing programs.  For information about the SAF, contact the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation at 306-787-4177 or toll-free 1-800-667-7567.
