New-Tech Construction Ltd. of Hague has pleaded guilty to four charges under occupational health and safety regulations and was fined $1,770 in Melfort Provincial Court on February 4, 2014.
The company pleaded guilty to:
- contravening section 116 of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers use a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge;
- contravening section 91 of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers wear approved industrial protective headwear) and was fined $150 with a $50 surcharge;
- contravening section 17 of the regulations (failure to ensure that all work at a place of employment was sufficiently and competently supervised) and was fined $400 with a $80 surcharge; and
- contravening section 19 of the regulations (failure to ensure that a worker is trained in all matters that are necessary to protect the health and safety of the worker) and was fined $200 with a $50 surcharge.
The charges relate to an incident on May 15, 2012, where numerous workers were observed at a commercial construction site in Melfort in violation of occupational health and safety laws. One additional charge was stayed.
In a separate case, Richard Denis of Saskatoon has pleaded guilty to two charges under occupational health and safety regulations and was fined $1,040 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on February 10, 2014.
Denis pleaded guilty to:
- contravening section 116 of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers use a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge; and
- contravening section 91 of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers wear approved industrial protective headwear) and was fined $150 with a $50 surcharge;
The charges stem from an inspection on August 31, 2012, at a worksite in Saskatoon. Workers were observed on a roof without appropriate fall protection equipment and headwear.
In another matter, John Duesener of Tisdale has pleaded guilty to one charge under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $840 in Tisdale Provincial Court on February 4, 2014.
Duesener pleaded guilty to:
- contravening section 116 of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers use a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge.
The charge stems from an inspection on January 12, 2012, at a construction site in Tisdale. Workers were observed on a roof without appropriate fall protection equipment.
In the last five years, occupational health and safety has cited nearly 6,400 contraventions for violations in the construction sector.
