Inquest into Deaths at St. Mary’s Villa

Released on February 24, 2014

A public inquest into the deaths of three people at St. Mary’s Villa in Humboldt has been scheduled for March 3 - 7, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the Humbolt Uniplex.

Father Roman Schneider, Monica Washkosky and Gertrude Lukan died following a carbon monoxide leak in a wing at St. Mary’s Villa in December 2010.

Section 19 of The Coroners Act, 1999 states that the Chief Coroner may direct that an inquest be held into the death of any person.

The purpose of an inquest is to provide a public hearing to examine in detail the events surrounding a death.  Sworn evidence is heard at the inquest before a jury of six persons from the community.  In addition to establishing who died, when and where the individual died, the medical cause of death and the manner of death, the coroner’s jury could make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.

Coroner Alma Wiebe, Q.C., of Saskatoon will preside at the inquest.
