Family Fun Day at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum

Released on February 14, 2014

In recognition of Monday, February 17 as Family Day in Saskatchewan, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM) is encouraging everyone to visit between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. for an afternoon of stories, crafts and activities for the whole family.

“This mid-winter holiday is a perfect time to take part in a family activity at the RSM,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Kevin Doherty said.  “The day’s special programming complements the museum’s fascinating exhibits and adds to the energy generated when children and their families come to discover our province’s natural history and our rich heritage.”

Planned indoor and outdoor activities include crafts, a scavenger hunt, snow-shoe races, discovery cart and bison target practice.  There is no charge to take part and advance tickets are not necessary.

Once again this year, as part of the day, the RSM is celebrating Aboriginal Storytelling Month.  The storytelling is presented in partnership by the Saskatchewan Writers' Guild and Library Services for Saskatchewan Aboriginal People Inc. and is supported by the Friends of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum.

“Within Aboriginal cultures, stories are used to recount histories, to explain, to amuse and to teach moral truths,” Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild Aboriginal Program Co-ordinator Susan McKenzie said.  “While some stories can be told at any time of the year, most stories are reserved for telling during winter.”

“The sharing of stories has always been part of the lives of First Nations and Métis people, as I expect it was for early settlers, and is for many Saskatchewan residents today,” RSM Museum Director Harold Bryant said.  "The focus on storytelling on Family Day maintains those cultural traditions and contributes to our quality of life.”

Founded in 1906, the RSM strives to cultivate interest in and knowledge of Saskatchewan’s natural and cultural history through research, exhibits and programs.  The RSM is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.  Admission is by donation.  Learn more at www.royalsaskmuseum.ca/.

The Friends of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum is a registered charity and not-for-profit organization which promotes the knowledge and understanding of Saskatchewan’s natural history through active support of the Museum and by encouraging public involvement and financial support of the Museum and its educational and scientific activities.
