J-Cam Contracting Ltd. of Edmonton, Alberta pleaded guilty to one count under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $8,400 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on January 30, 2014.
The company pleaded guilty to:
- contravening section 116 of the regulations (failure to use a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $6,000 with a $2,400 surcharge.
The charge relates to a worker injury on November 24, 2011 when a worker was injured after falling more than seven metres off a residential roof in Saskatoon. Two additional charges were stayed.
In two separate matters, Duane Ramage and Travis Ramage of Regina pleaded guilty to charges under occupational health and safety legislation in Regina Provincial Court on January 30, 2014.
Duane Ramage pleaded guilty to:
- contravening section 116 of the regulations (failure to ensure that a worker at a work area use a fall protection system where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $1,000 with a $400 surcharge; and
- contravening section 91 of the regulations (failure to require a worker to use approved industrial protective headwear) and was fined $150 with a $50 surcharge.
Travis Ramage pleaded guilty to:
- contravening section 116 of the regulations (failure to use a fall protection system at a temporary or permanent work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge.
The charges were laid after an inspection on October 19, 2012 where an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Officer observed workers on a roof without utilizing fall protection equipment and appropriate headwear. Three additional charges were stayed.
In another matter, Carson Energy Services Ltd. of Lampman, Saskatchewan pleaded guilty to one count under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $980 in Regina Provincial Court on January 20, 2014.
The company pleaded guilty to:
- contravening section 263 of the regulations (failure to ensure that a worker is protected from cave-in or sliding material in a trench that was more than 1.2 metres deep) and was fined $700 with a $280 surcharge.
The charge relates to an inspection on January 10, 2012 where an OHS Officer observed three workers working in an unsafe trench near Pilot Butte.
OHS conducts worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced. In the last five years, OHS cited nearly 6,400 contraventions for violations in the construction sector.
