Two Saskatchewan Companies Guilty of Safety Violations

Released on February 3, 2014

Tollifson Cable Service Ltd. of Moose Jaw pleaded guilty to one charge under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $4,900 in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on January 15, 2014.

The company pleaded guilty to:

  • contravening subsections 262(1) and 260(2) of the regulations (failure to ensure workers were protected from cave-ins or sliding materials in a trench) and was fined $3,500 with a $1,400 surcharge.

The charge was laid after an inspection on August 26, 2011 where Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Officers observed workers not in compliance with occupational health and safety legislation at an excavation site in Hanley.  Two additional charges were withdrawn.

In a separate case, Acme Reno’s Inc. of Emerald Park pleaded guilty to two counts under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $1,040 in Regina Provincial Court on January 15, 2014.

Acme Reno’s Inc. pleaded guilty to:

  • contravening clause 116 (2)(a) of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers used a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge; and
  • contravening subsection 91(1)of the regulations (failure to provide and/or require workers to use appropriate protective headwear) and was fined $150 with a $50 surcharge.

The charges relate to an inspection on October 18, 2011 where an OHS Officer observed six workers on the roof of a residential building working without fall protection equipment and appropriate headwear.  Three additional charges were stayed.

OHS conducts worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced. Last year, 33 per cent of all inspections were in the construction industry.
