Exhibit Recognizing the Women of Government House Opens

Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield officially opened a new feature exhibit at Government House in Regina this afternoon, which recognizes the roles that women have played as representatives of the Vice-Regal Office.

“I am deeply inspired by the women who preceded my time at Government House,” Solomon Schofield said.  “Whether they were here as supportive spouses or as Her Majesty’s representative, they were all committed to the Vice-Regal Office and each made enormous contributions to our province.  This fascinating new exhibit is a wonderful tribute to six truly remarkable women.”

This exhibit includes photos, outfits representing each of the six women, multimedia features and a beaded necklace that Madame Forget received from Chief Little Bear.  It is open to the public free of charge during regular hours and will remain on display until January 2015.

“Jewels of the Crown: Women of Government House pays tribute to these women and the significant contributions they have made to our province,” Regina Qu'Appelle Valley MLA Laura Ross said on behalf of Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Kevin Doherty.  “I encourage people to view this exhibit and learn more about how these women played important roles in our history.”
 
Government House was built in 1891 and first served as the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of the North-West Territories.  Restored to the period of Lieutenant Governor Amédée Forget who was in office from 1898-1910, the museum offers a glimpse of life at Government House at the turn of the 20th century.  Engaging experiences for children and visitors alike are offered at Government House year round, including activities in the Edwardian Gardens during the summer which provide a welcoming green space so visitors can enjoy the richness and beauty of this heritage landmark.
