Saskatoon Court Imposes Fine for Safety Violations

Leader Builders Ltd. of Saskatoon pleaded guilty to two counts under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $1,040 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on April 10, 2014.

The company pleaded guilty to:
  • contravening section 116 of the regulations (failure to ensure use of a fall protection system at a temporary or permanent work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge; and
  • contravening section 91 of the regulations (failure to require a worker to use approved industrial protective headwear) and was fined $150 with a $50 surcharge.
The charges relate to an inspection in Saskatoon on August 30, 2012 where an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Officer observed workers on a roof installing plywood without utilizing fall protection equipment.  Two additional charges were stayed.

In a separate matter, Dave Deplaedt Retail Sales Ltd. of Saskatoon pleaded guilty to one count under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $840 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on April 10, 2014.

The company pleaded guilty to:
  • contravening section 116 of the regulations (failure to ensure use of a fall protection system at a temporary or permanent work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge.
The charge relates to an inspection in Saskatoon on November 30, 2012 where an OHS Officer observed a worker on the edge of a rooftop without utilizing fall protection equipment. 

In the last five years, OHS has cited nearly 6,400 contraventions for violations in the construction sector.
