Environment Ministry Improves Wildlife Management Zone Boundaries

The Ministry of Environment has amended The Wildlife Management Zones and Special Areas Boundaries Regulations, 1990 to create more easily identifiable boundaries across the province to help direct hunting opportunities and better manage wildlife populations.

Based on a recommendation from the Red Tape Reduction Committee to address concerns about difficulty in locating specific zone boundaries, the ministry has revised 33 of Saskatchewan’s 78 wildlife management zones (WMZs).

“The boundaries have been moved to readily identifiable landmarks such as numbered highways, municipal roads or water bodies,” Environment Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said.  “Improved boundary definition will mean a more positive hunting experience in Saskatchewan.”

Forty-five zones currently have boundaries that are easily located with no related wildlife management concerns.  These boundaries have not been changed.

Under the amended regulations the WMZ boundaries will automatically adjust to future changes in the provincial highway or municipal road network.

A high-quality digital map has been produced for the ministry’s website and for inclusion in the annual Hunters’ and Trappers’ Guide.  

“These revisions provide the information necessary for an external party to develop an electronic wildlife management zone data set,” Cheveldayoff said.  “The digital data can then be downloaded by hunters directly onto their personal GPS units.”
