Saskatchewan Volunteer Medals Presented Today

Released on April 14, 2014

Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield presented medals during a ceremony at Government House today to recognize volunteers from Prince Albert, Moosomin, Regina, Swift Current and Saskatoon.

“We rely on volunteers to run organizations, to plan events, to fundraise, and to create a vision for what this province can be,” Solomon Schofield said.  “In short, our volunteers are the heart and soul of Saskatchewan.  This year’s medal recipients embody the very best of what it means to be from Saskatchewan.  They are generous, capable, and committed and I thank them, most sincerely, for a lifetime of leadership and giving.”

The nine Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal recipients for 2013 are:
  • Dr. David Buettner, Prince Albert
  • Barb L. Butler, Regina
  • T. Morley Gusway, Regina
  • Maisie Hanna, Regina
  • Betty McDougall, Swift Current
  • Ted Merriman, Saskatoon
  • Margaret Sandison, Regina
  • Pansy Taylor, Moosomin
  • Walter A. Thiessen (posthumous), Saskatoon
The Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal recognizes outstanding volunteers or those who exemplify exceptional community involvement.

The medal itself is silver, circular in form, and suspended by a v-shaped clasp from a ribbon of green and gold, the provincial colours.  It bears the Saskatchewan shield of arms with the Crown and the motto Nos ipsos dedimus (We Gave of Ourselves).

The names and photos of the recipients of the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal are displayed on a board adjacent to the Athabasca Gallery in the Legislative Building.  The nine recipients will be added at a later date.

Since its 1995 inception, 166 people – including today’s recipients – have received the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal.
