CANADIAN FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN DAY PROCLAIMED IN SASKATCHEWAN

Released on September 12, 2013

The Provincial Government has proclaimed September 14, as Canadian Federation of University Women Day in Saskatchewan.

The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) was founded in 1919 and is a national non-profit, women’s equality-seeking organization that works to advance the status and human rights of women and girls, as well as promote quality public education in Canada.  The CFUW is comprised of almost 9,000 members and 110 clubs across Canada.  CFUW is the largest of the 61 affiliates of the International Federation of University Women (IFUW).

“The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased with the role the CFUW plays by promoting post-secondary education to women,” Advanced Education Minister Don Morgan said.  “Our government recently rolled out the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth to build a better life for all Saskatchewan people and the efforts of the CFUW will continue to support our province’s growth now and in the future.”

“Education is a key equality lever for women and their families in ensuring economic security and safety,” Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for the Status of Women June Draude said.  “We are delighted to recognize the CFUW chapters across the province in their mission to promote quality education to improve the status of women and girls.”

CFUW Saskatchewan provides approximately $40,000 in scholarships yearly to University students, as well as grants to music and science festivals, early learning centers and other community endeavors.

“In July, 2013 CFUW Saskatoon hosted the National CFUW conference and Annual General Meeting,” CFUW Saskatchewan Council Regional Director Marlene Chatterson said.  “All the Saskatchewan clubs were involved in hosting a very successful meeting of women from coast to coast.  The Saskatchewan clubs will be celebrating CFUW day on September 14 in their own unique ways and will be continuing to promote education, human rights, equality and social justice.”

Students can access information about the scholarships through their University.  Grant information can be obtained from local community colleges, high schools, music festival committees or science fair groups.

Canadian Federation of University Women Day was first declared by the Government of Saskatchewan in 2011.

The CFUW Saskatchewan Council is made up of more than 200 members and five clubs in Estevan, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon and Yorkton.
