SUPPORT FOR THOSE IN NEED OF SHELTER ON COLD NIGHTS

Released on November 29, 2013

With cold temperatures now setting in, the Ministry of Social Services and their many community partners want to ensure that no one is left out in the cold this winter.

The Ministry of Social Services works across the province with community-based organizations that provide emergency shelter to people in need.

In Saskatoon and Regina, community and government partners have co-ordinated their efforts and developed formal cold weather strategies to support those at risk of homelessness.  These strategies ensure that community services are co-ordinated and connected to provide the best possible service.

“No one should be without a warm, safe place to sleep during these cold winter months,” Social Services Minister June Draude said.  “There is assistance available for people who are in need of emergency shelter and it’s important that we all know where to call if we see someone in need.”

In Regina, Mobile Crisis Services is available at 306-757-0127 anytime.  Callers will be connected with the shelter support appropriate to their situation.  During daytime business hours, individuals may also drop in to the Ministry of Social Services’ Regina service centre at 2045 Broad Street for assistance.

In Saskatoon, the Salvation Army is available anytime at 306-242-6280.  Callers will be connected with the shelter support appropriate to their situation.  During daytime business hours, individuals may drop in to the Ministry of Social Services’ Saskatoon service centre at 160 - 2nd Avenue South for assistance.

Individuals may also drop in to any emergency shelter in either community and they will be assisted to connect with the appropriate service.

In other communities across the province, individuals are advised to contact their nearest Ministry of Social Services service centre (www.socialservices.gov.sk.ca/service-delivery), an emergency shelter or mobile crisis service if available in their community or police.  If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
