CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON NEW SOCIAL HOUSING UNITS IN REGINA

Released on November 22, 2013

The construction of a new 48-unit housing development in north Regina kicked off today with a sod turning ceremony.  The Government of Saskatchewan is supporting the project with $9.9 million in funding from Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC).  The funding is part of the government’s portfolio renewal initiative, designed to develop new medium-density multiple unit housing in the province.

“Our province is growing, and that growth creates challenges including the need for affordable housing,” Regina Qu’Appelle Valley MLA Laura Ross said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude.  “Our government is committed to meeting housing challenges by working with our partners in communities across the province.”

“Affordable housing is a priority for our community,” Regina Mayor Michael Fougere said.  “This unique project is another step toward resolving Regina’s housing shortage.  The City of Regina is pleased to contribute through our housing incentives policy for which this project will be eligible for a five-year tax exemption for providing new rental units.”

The project is being built by Deveraux Developments.  The development will consist of four 12-unit buildings with eight two-bedroom and 40 three-bedroom apartments, two of which are accessible.  The units will be managed by the Regina Housing Authority.

“We are excited to work with SHC in bringing much-needed affordable rental housing to the Regina area,” Deveraux Developments CEO Denis Jones said.

Construction is expected to be complete by next summer.  The project is located in the Hawkstone subdivision in north Regina.

Under the portfolio renewal initiative, SHC is selling and replacing approximately 300 of its single-family units in Regina, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert with modern and energy-efficient multi-unit housing.  Current tenants are being given the opportunity to purchase the single family home they are renting.  Eligible tenants will be given the opportunity to move to other social housing if they don’t purchase their current unit.
