NEW GROUP HOME FOR PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES OPENS IN REGINA

Released on November 21, 2013

Grand opening ceremonies are being held today for a new group home for people with intellectual disabilities in Regina.

The three space home is operated by Chip and Dale Homes Inc. through a funding partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan.  The Ministry of Social Services provided capital funding of $550,000 for the project, and will invest almost $480,000 in annual operating funding, to meet the higher support needs of the residents.

“We’re fortunate to live in a growing province with a vibrant economy,” Social Services Minister June Draude said.  “That growth enables us to invest in important programs and services that benefit some of our most vulnerable citizens.  Our government is proud to support community-based organizations such as Chip and Dale Homes in helping people with intellectual disabilities to be included in their communities.”

“We are pleased to make this home - our 11th - a reality through our partnership with the Ministry of Social Services,” Chip and Dale Board Chair Shirley Skinner said.  “We will support the three men who will live in this home to become part of their neighbourhood and the community.”

Chip and Dale, which was incorporated in 1980 and has operated in Regina since 1983, develops and manages residential services for adults with physical and/or intellectual disabilities.

“Our government is committed to making Saskatchewan the best place to live for people with disabilities,” Draude said.  “The successful completion of this group home project, and others like it across the province, is a demonstration of that commitment.”
