GOVERNMENT OF SASKATCHEWAN CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK

Released on November 21, 2013

The Government of Saskatchewan joins more than 100 jurisdictions around the world to celebrate International Education Week (IEW) from November 18-22.

The purpose of International Education Week is to showcase the significant contribution that international education makes to our students, our educational institutions and Canada.  This year’s theme is “Celebrating Canada’s Engagement with the World.”

“International education provides a valuable opportunity for Saskatchewan students to connect with other parts of the world,” Advanced Education Minister Rob Norris said.  “It encourages students to study abroad, and welcomes international students who bring global perspectives into our classrooms and communities.”

As part of the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth, the government has identified a number of goals focused around international education, which include:

  • increasing the number of international students in Saskatchewan by 50 per cent by 2020;
  • encouraging the study of international languages in Saskatchewan business schools; and
  • establishing a Saskatchewan International Future Scholarship providing students with the opportunity to study business at an international institution and gain valuable business experience.

“Our government understands the importance of international education as it helps our students develop new skills and global networks, fostering the continued growth of our province,” Norris said.

Currently, there are almost 4,000 international post-secondary students from more than 90 countries studying in Saskatchewan and more than 900 Saskatchewan university students studying across various countries.
