REITER MEETING WITH COUNTERPARTS ON ABORIGINAL ISSUES

Released on November 18, 2013

Minister responsible for First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs Jim Reiter is in Winnipeg today and Tuesday for a meeting on Aboriginal issues with his federal, provincial and territorial counterparts.

The Aboriginal Affairs Working Group consists of ministers of Aboriginal Affairs from all provinces and territories as well as leaders from five national Aboriginal organizations.  Their Winnipeg meeting includes discussions on improving Aboriginal graduation outcomes, boosting economic development, improving housing both on- and off-reserve, and ending violence against Aboriginal women and girls.

“Our government has been working hard to improve education and employment outcomes for Aboriginal people through our Saskatchewan Plan for Growth and through nearly $185 million in targeted program funding in our current fiscal year,” Reiter said.  “I welcome the opportunity to meet with my ministerial colleagues and Aboriginal leaders for dialogue on the common issues facing us and for a sharing of best practices.”

The ministers will also hear presentations at the meeting from federal Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Minister Bernard Valcourt as well as from Justice Murray Sinclair with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
