Released on November 18, 2013
A public inquest into the death of David Gruno has been scheduled for December 2 through December 6, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Swift Current.
Gruno, age 54, was found in medical distress at the Swift Current RCMP detachment on July 15, 2010. He was transported to the Pasqua Hospital in Regina, where he passed away the next day.
Section 20 of The Coroners Act, 1999, states that the Chief Coroner shall hold an inquest into the death of a person who dies while an inmate at a jail or a correctional facility, unless the coroner is satisfied that the person's death was due entirely to natural causes and was not preventable.
The purpose of an inquest is to provide a public hearing to examine in detail the events surrounding a death. In addition to establishing the medical cause of death and the manner of death, the coroner's jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.
Coroner Keith Kilback of Regina will preside at the inquest.
