Released on November 8, 2013
Andrew Hanson of B-Say-Tah, Saskatchewan pleaded guilty to two charges under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 and was fined $1,400 in Regina Provincial Court on October 30, 2013.
Mr. Hanson pleaded guilty to:
- contravening section 116(2)(a) of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers used a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $500 with a $200 surcharge;
- contravening section 91(1) of the regulations (failure to provide and/or require workers to use appropriate protective headwear) and was fined $500 with a $200 surcharge.
The charges stemmed from an inspection by an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Officer on June 16, 2011, at a worksite in the village of B-Say-Tah, near Fort Qu’Appelle. Two other charges were withdrawn.
OHS conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood, and enforced. In 2013-14, there have been 22 convictions for OHS violations and more than $260,000 in fines.
