CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON NEW SOCIAL HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IN PRINCE ALBERT

Released on November 8, 2013

Construction of 30 new family social housing units is underway in Prince Albert, as part of the Government of Saskatchewan’s portfolio renewal initiative.  The government, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), is investing $5.6 million in the development, designed to produce new, medium-density multiple unit housing in Prince Albert.

The housing units are being built by RNF Development Company of Prince Albert, and will be managed by the Prince Albert Housing Authority.

“This project is an example of our government’s commitment to address housing challenges that result from the growth our province is experiencing,” Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude.  “By reinvesting in the community, we’re able to provide safe, affordable rental housing for 30 families, and the sale of the existing rental housing will provide new entry level homeownership opportunities here in Prince Albert.”

“I am very pleased to see we are moving forward with affordable housing, and I am excited for the 30 families that will be moving into new, safe and modern homes,” Prince Albert Mayor Greg Dionne said.

Located in a mature part of the East Hill area of Prince Albert on 5A Avenue East, the development includes 30 units; 28 three-bedroom units and two two-bedroom wheelchair accessible units.

SHC is in the process of selling approximately 300 single-family housing units in Regina, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert, with the proceeds to be reinvested in new medium-density multiple unit housing, to help meet the demand for affordable housing in communities across the province.

Current tenants are being given the opportunity to purchase the single family home they are renting.  Eligible tenants will be given the opportunity to move to other social housing if they don’t purchase their current unit.
