The Ministry of Justice is taking action on the recommendations coming out of the investigation into the Saskatoon Correctional Centre inmate escape from the Royal University Hospital on April 9, 2013.
The review of the incident led to six recommendations. The ministry is developing an action plan that will address all six:
- Enhanced security partnerships between correctional escort staff and hospital security staff to ensure appropriate collaboration;
- Revise existing policies and procedures for consistency and application to legislation;
- Ensure compliance with existing and revised policies;
- Enhance Correctional Worker hospital duty training that includes practical field training exercises;
- Develop and streamline a more nimble incident reporting process and public notification procedures for dangerous incidents that require the immediate release of public safety information; and
- An operational debriefing must be conducted for all incidents of this nature.
“These recommendations and the resulting action plan will strengthen how we conduct our work in adult corrections in this province,” Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell said. “This government is committed to making the necessary changes to ensure the safety and security of our staff and the public.”
Corrections and Policing will continue to work toward creating an environment that reduces the chances of similar situations arising in the future. This includes working with key partners including Saskatoon Police Service, Correctional Services of Canada, and the Saskatoon Health Region to develop an “inmate in custody” protocol.
