The new access roads to the Emma Lake Recreation Site and Murray Point Campground are now complete and provide a safer, smoother ride for residents and visitors to this popular Saskatchewan tourism region north of Prince Albert.
Construction took place on the 6.3 km access road from Highway 263 to the Okema Beach grid and the 0.7 km access road to the Murray Point subdivision and campground at a final cost of $8 million.
“These roads were originally thin membrane surface structures that had been converted to a gravel surface and were in poor condition,” Saskatchewan Rivers MLA Nadine Wilson said on behalf of Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris. “The highway was rebuilt to a primary weight standard, as a high quality highway that can withstand all types of traffic and properly showcase this beautiful tourism region.”
The contract for the upgrading of the Emma Lake Access Road and the access into Murray Point was awarded to R & B Crushing Ltd. of Kelvington. Road work commenced in the spring of 2010 and was completed in October 2013.
“These roads are heavily used by our ratepayers as well as tourists to the region,” District of Lakeland Reeve Al Christensen said. “This rebuild is appreciated by our residents and will aid the efforts to increase tourism in the region.”
The 2013-14 Budget for Saskatchewan’s highways provided $576 million to build, maintain and operate the highway system. The Government of Saskatchewan has invested a record $3.7 billion in transportation infrastructure since 2008.
