Premier Brad Wall recognized 20 new recipients of the Saskatchewan Scholarship of Honour at the Saskatchewan Legislature today.
The Saskatchewan Scholarship of Honour honours returning service men and women as well as the spouses and children of injured or fallen members of Canada’s Armed Forces. It provides a one-time award of $5,000 for post-secondary education to recognize their commitment to our country and our province.
“Our government is honoured to provide this scholarship on behalf of the people of Saskatchewan,” Wall said. “It is a very small token of gratitude considering the sacrifices made by the brave women and men serving in Canada’s Armed Forces and their families. It is because of such heroism that we can live in a country where we can pursue our dreams and make plans for the future.”
Eligible candidates are assessed on the following criteria:
- Current or former Saskatchewan residents;
- Returning service men and women who actively served in designated military operations in the Canadian Forces (Regular or Reserves), after January 2001, or the spouse and/or child of permanently disabled or deceased individuals who served in designated military operations after January 2001; and
- Enrolled in a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.
Since the scholarship was started in 2009, 113 scholarships have been awarded, totalling $565,000. Six of the recipients are children of deceased members of Canada’s Armed Forces.
Scholarship awards are initiated by the candidate’s application. The Ministry of Advanced Education works with the federal government to distribute scholarship information to returning soldiers and their families.
