The Government of Saskatchewan has allocated more than $390,000 through the Saskatchewan Community Literacy Fund (SCLF) to fourteen community-based organizations to provide family, adult or workplace literacy programs to address identified community literacy needs that have not been met through other programs.
“This fund helps support the higher achievement of people of all ages, and provides equitable opportunities for learners across the province,” Education Minister Don Morgan said. “Strong literacy skills are foundational to an individual’s life-long learning and future success, which is why the Government of Saskatchewan is committed to supporting community-based organizations to help address literacy needs in their communities.”
The long-term outcomes of the SCLF are to strengthen the families’ ability to engage in their children’s learning, to increase adult literacy skills and to enhance the quality of life, independence and well-being of program participants. The program also encourages collaboration and partnerships among other community, business and industry organizations, as well as government agencies that provide programming and support to adults and families.
An additional $100,000 has been allocated to support the program through the Saskatchewan Literacy Network and the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Literacy Network. Funding has been provided to these organizations to manage the proposal and selection process. The rest of the funding will be allocated to these organizations for support services to SCLF recipients to ensure literacy outcomes are met.
“Strong literacy and essential skills have positive outcomes for individuals, their communities and the province,” Saskatchewan Literacy Network Executive Director Karen Rosser said. “The Saskatchewan Community Literacy Fund provides an opportunity for organizations to build a stronger sense of community and to encourage citizens to engage fully with their families, workplaces and communities.”
This funding was committed in April and interested applicants were to submit an outcomes – based logic model along with their proposal by June 15. The selected organizations are required to report to the Literacy Office on the steps taken to achieve short, medium and long-term outcomes identified in their application.
