PROVINCE HELPS HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD TWO HOMES IN PRINCE ALBERT

Released on November 1, 2013

Another Habitat for Humanity partner family has a place to call home, thanks to $50,000 in funding assistance from the Government of Saskatchewan through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.  Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude, and other partners attended a key presentation today to celebrate the completion of the home located at 537-12th Street West in Prince Albert.  This is the second completed build that was constructed with support from Carlton Comprehensive High School (CCHS).

Sod was also turned to officially begin the construction of an additional Habitat for Humanity home located at 1870-13th Street West.  The province is contributing $50,000 in funding assistance to the project.  This is the second unit constructed by the Correctional Service of Canada through CORCAN for Habitat.  CORCAN works with inmates through certified vocational training programs where inmates build houses while acquiring skills for the home construction industry.

“We are proud to help Habitat for Humanity and its partners to provide homeownership opportunities for Saskatchewan families in need,” Jurgens said.  “These projects, and others, support two overriding goals of our government’s Plan for Growth – to ensure Saskatchewan continues to grow and to ensure our province is meeting the challenges of growth.  Most importantly, we are helping families to grow and prosper in a province that is full of promise.”

“We are very happy that another partner family will enjoy a new home being built by CORCAN, another important partner of Habitat Prince Albert,”  Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert President Morris Sawchuk said.  “It is through these partnerships that we can make more dreams come true.  Both partner families have completed all the necessary requirements to receive their mortgage and it is with great pleasure that we dedicate a home to them.  We wish them the very best for the future.”

In the 2013-14 Budget, the province committed an additional $2 million to help build 40 new Habitat for Humanity homes throughout the province.  This represents the largest budget increase in funding to Habitat for Humanity in Canada, and brings the province’s overall commitment to Habitat for Humanity to $7.1 million since March 2009.  This total includes $600,000 from the province’s Summit Action Fund, which will create sustainable revolving land trusts in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert to assist in the purchase and development of land.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.  The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.

Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 hours of sweat equity to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes, and participates in valuable training and preparation sessions.  In return, their lives are transformed by the positive experience of working with the Habitat for Humanity community and by the many benefits that come along with homeownership.
